Lamentablemente en este mundo globalizado el aprendizaje de lenguas no se valoriza en todo lugar.  Si uno se dedica a aprender una lengua menos conocida, siempre siguen las preguntas tipo "¿de qué sirve esa lengua?" y "¿por qué no estudias la lengua X que tiene millones de hablantes y que te puede servir de ventaja económica?" y "si eres estadounidense ¿por qué te interesa tal lengua minoritaria?".  Como lingüista, honestamente, esas preguntas me hartan.  Para mí simplemente si una lengua existe, eso indica que hay hablantes de esa lengua y siendo humano quiero comunicarme con ellos en su lengua dentro de sus parámetros culturales hasta dónde me sea posible.   No todo tiene que hacerse con un fin monetario o profesional subyacente.  Además, a mi parecer, es poco sincero dedicarse al aprendizaje de una lengua con fines puramente lucrativos e individualistas.  Esto me ha pasado acá en EEUU y unas cuantas veces con algunas personas chilenas con las que tengo trato.  Además, con algunas personas entra el tema de la discriminación por los conflictos que siempre han existido entre el gobierno de Chile y los Mapuche.  Todo llegó a su colmo ayer y decidí dejar unos pensamientos aquí en este espacio explicando y detallando un poco (en mapudugnun)  la razón por la que estudio mapudungun.  Además, dejo saber algunas otras cosas tocantes al lenguaje humano y a la humanidad.  Como sigo siendo estudiante del mapudungun, estoy casi seguro de que no es perfecto lo que he escrito, pero creo que se entiende y me ha servido de muestra de lo que he progresado desde que emprendí este viaje.

Kiñeke pichi rakiduam (Some Personal Thoughts)

Sadly, in this globalized world, language learning is not always valued everywhere.  Sometimes, when you decided to study a lesser known language, you get asked questions like “What are you going to do with that?”, “Why don’t you study Language X which has so many millions of speakers and can give you economic advantages”, and “If you’re  from the US why do you want to learn a minority language?”.  As a linguist, these types of questions wear on me.  For me, if a language exists, then that means there are speakers of that language and I want to communicate with them within their cultural parameters to the best of my capacities.  Not everything has to be done with a professional or monetary endgame. Likewise, at least in my opinion, it seems insincere to learn a language for purely individual and lucrative purposes.  This has happened to me with people here and in Chile with whom I maintain varying levels of contact.  As a consequence of the ongoing conflicts between the Chilean government and the Mapuche, discrimination comes into play as well.  Yesterday, it all came to a head and I decided to leave a few of my personal thoughts in this space that explain and detail my motives (in Mapudungun) for studying Mapudungun.  Also, I express a few other feelings regarding language and humanity as well. As I am still a student, I am positive that everything I’ve written is not perfect, but I think it’s pretty understandable.  It also is kind of a personal record of the progress I’ve made since undertaking this journey.
